Akiko Hirai - Prose Poetry
Wed-Sat: 11-6pm
Akiko Hirai's solo show 散文詩 'Prose Poetry' presents a collection of new works, which marks a development in her practice. Layers on the surface build a textural landscape, creating a multisensory journey. Hirai explains how:
"We see things in other senses too, not just through sight – it brings us back to feelings in our past experiences."
Akiko often carves her vessels and works quickly and rhythmically. There is an absence of mechanical regularity as she fears the rhythm becoming too static. The carved textures derive from Kamakura-bori, an old folk craft of wood carving based in Kamakura in Japan. This is called Kohiki.
