"In this new body of work Hartley is working purely in the present. Committing herself to arriving at her studio daily without any pre meditations and with complete surrender. Through this she is creating a dialogue between two main characters, herself and the surface, and the language is simply colour and gesture. In this dynamic the work shows rawness, more confrontation and has a new vulnerability to it.

Falling over backwards is asking the viewer to witness it all in the present. Your perspective may change within seconds and rhythms may be disrupted, Hartley says- ‘we must understand that painting is highly sensitive, it can be complex and sometimes overwhelmed in itself, this is also part and parcel of being an artist, which means that maybe we’ll never get resolution, but there is a simplicity in the act of seeking."
