Early C20th - Painting
American Modernism
Mon-Fri: 10-6pm; Sat: 10-5pm
"The show features works by pioneering artists such as Arthur Dove, John Marin, Thomas Hart Benton and Stuart Davis.
One particular highlight for me, was the opportunity to show one of only five watercolour regionalist works that Stuart Davis exhibited at the famous Armory Show of 1913. The watercolour we are showing, called The Dance, provides a snapshot in time of Davis' career; for the Armory Show was to become the turning point for Davis. Upon viewing the other artists' work on show, Davis discovered a new direction of innovative expressiveness. Davis went on to become revered for his abstract pronto-pop works that lead him to become one of the most highly celebrated American artists of the 20th century.
A very small example of John Marin's love for watercolour and abstract seascapes is also part of the show. Marin became very attached to Maine, in the US, after spending his first summer there in 1914. From that point on, Maine became a frequent setting for many of his watercolour works, with the changeable seas and dramatic skies offered by the rocky coastline. Marin's abstract adaptation of water and its emotive states is what he became well known for and later in life achieved tremendous prestige recognised as one of America's finest seascape artists."
