Brian Griffiths & Frank Kent - Life and its most trivial particulars [Artists present - 11-1:30pm]
Life and its most trivial particulars is a new photographic installation by sculptors Brian Griffiths and Frank Kent opening at Van Gogh House. It is the first in a new annual commission series, launching in the 50th year since the building was found to be the London residence of the renowned artist.
Life and its most trivial particulars unfolds across all 8 rooms of Van Gogh House, with each image an elaborately constructed, gently irreverent mise en scène responding to the life and work of Van Gogh, and the wider history, architecture and functions of the house.
The works reflect Griffiths’ and Kent’s own imaginings of Van Gogh, his myth and legacy, informed by references ranging from the artist's early works such as Potato Field and Bob Law’s sculptures of Van Gogh and Gaugin's chairs; to those less direct including the writings of Charles Dickens (whose writing Van Gogh loved), a Japanese parasol, a drum kit (if Van Gogh was in a band what instrument would he have played?) and finds from car boot sales.
