Carpenters Workshop Gallery present David Adjaye - Yawaa
28.04-10.06
Inaugurating Carpenters Workshop Gallery’s new London flagship where, the gallery will debut two coinciding solo exhibitions. One will premier Sir David Adjaye's latest body of collectible design and the second will launch the gallery's historic design programming with an exhibition by the late Brazilian designer Jose Zanine Caldas.
Carpenters Workshop Gallery will premiere a new collection by Sir David Adjaye featuring eight limited-edition objects that reflect Adjaye’s recent experimentation with his ongoing Monoform series while also delving into the materiality of bronze (‘Yaawa’ translates as ‘bronze’ in Twi, one of the indigenous Ghanaian languages). To reveal the metal in a new light, he explores different techniques of hand casting, oxidising, patinating and polishing.
The focus on bronze recalls its history on the African continent as a noble material with traditional applications in craft and weaponry. Each individual piece “aims to expand this lineage, doing so through the creation of a form and technique that also offers utility in space,” explains Adjaye.
