Dr Kate Aspinall - A Sense of the Underneath: Appreciating the Evolution of Frank Auerbach's Drawing Practices

Frank Auerbach: The Sitters is the first dedicated overview of the artist’s portrait heads. For her talk, Dr Kate Aspinall will lead a tour of the exhibition focusing on the works on paper. These works are the keystone of Auerbach’s practice but have only rarely been described in detail. Working mostly on large ‘Imperial’ sized paper, Auerbach accords his portrait drawings with similar status to the oil paintings.

Dr Kate Aspinall is an independent historian, writer and artist. Her research explores the cultural and intellectual history of Anglo-American drawing practices. She has contributed to a new publication released by Yale University Press next month, Frank Auerbach: Drawings of People, which explores Auerbach’s relationship to drawing.
