Eleanor Nairne on Betty Parsons
Eleanor Nairne, Curator at the Barbican Art Gallery, London, for an introduction to the exhibition Betty Parsons: The Queen of the Circus.
Nairne will provide insights into the twentieth-century American avant-garde of which Parsons was a leading figure, following the opening of her hugely influential New York gallery in 1946. The artist's rigorous and experimental practice - a unique contribution to post-war abstraction - will also be explored, drawing upon the paintings and sculptures in the show which span across three decades.
Nairne's recent exhibition, Lee Krasner: Living Colour (2019), celebrated the work and life of an artist who, like Parsons, was a pioneering figure of Abstract Expressionism. Krasner in fact received her first solo exhibition at the invitation of Parsons: her paintings were displayed at the Betty Parsons Gallery in 1951.
