Ming Ying - Society: Acts I – IV

JD Malat Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition ‘Society: Acts I – IV' by emerging Chinese artist Ming Ying.

‘Society: Acts I – IV' includes 12 new oil paintings. Taking inspiration from the theatre and the 18th and 19th centuries, Ming has structured the exhibition into four 'acts' to explore the stage-like setting of our contemporary society. The artworks reference society’s quotidian moments and flashy social scenes to explore the themes of loneliness and desire.

As a London-based artist who was born in Beijing, China, Ming Ying (b. 1995) reflects on the experiences of different races, cultures, and distinct social classes within new environments. ‘Society: Acts I – IV' shares Ying’s personal experience of alienation in loud environments and reminds the audience of society's unstoppable performance and what it's like to be influenced by quick change. The presented artworks depict romantic, psychedelic scenes based on reality while implying a vision of desire with overtones of marginalization and homogeneity, which ultimately allows viewers to identify with the subjects in the paintings.
