Mid C20th-Contemporary - Works on Paper
Nine Artist Group Show incl. Balthus, Barrington, Egil, Polke & Stiegemann - Studies and Exercises
Studies and Exercises is a presentation of works on paper by Balthus, Alvaro Barrington, Raphael Egil, Petrit Halilaj, Kaoli Mashio, Gabriel Orozco, Sigmar Polke, Dorothea Stiegemann and Yoshifusa Utagawa.
The exhibition will be a network of unexpected rhymes and discords, allegiances, animosities, connections and disconnections, a cosmos-like web of artistic relationships, good and bad. At the heart of the exhibition is a special presentation of Raphael Egil’s Beijing Diaries, a ‘show-within-a-show’, alongside the group’s concurrent studies in Chinese ink. This investigative body of work charts the experience of a European painter living in China, his daily impressions of the capital, and his attempts to work with a material of which he has no mastery and no cultural knowledge, the process of study his only means of making.
This is an exhibition about the process of making art, one which proposes the idea that even finished, ‘major’ works are forever acts of Heraclitan process. The near-infinite currents of influence and exchange taking place in the act of making, so vast that even (or perhaps most of all) the artist will never know all of them, and the strange resonances that occur when ostensibly unrelated works are brought together, is here celebrated for its own sake. Maybe it is working on paper, rather than canvas, that gets artists closest to that beating, secret, changing thing that makes works of art alive.
