New Work - Sculpture

Ronan Bouroullec - 23 bas-reliefs

Ronan’s artistic practice, undertaken independently from and alongside his design, has mostly been associated with the medium of drawing, with meticulous and delicate compositions defined by sequenced lines, drawn by hand with a Japanese felt-tip brush.

For the first time ever, Ronan will be unveiling a new body of work that explores an entirely new medium: the bas-relief.

Standing halfway between painting and sculpture, drawing and design, these bas-reliefs are composed of indistinct ceramic forms that Ronan creates and assembles, in the end conjuring what might look like abstract landscapes, ever-changing with the light.

Each unique piece is the result of the designer's instinctual movements. Using a knife, he slices the clay to shape the desired forms and places them in a furnace. As the clay is fired, it evolves and becomes subject to a transformed appearance. Bouroullec paints and then, on an aluminium plate, begins to compose a scene of gravity and balance, where forms interact on a shiny monochromatic plane.
