Symbiosis: Living Island
"Step onto Inujima and explore how an extraordinary living art project has transformed the island’s landscape and enriched the lives of its inhabitants.
Since 2010, this tiny Japanese island has been host to the ever-evolving Inujima ‘Art House Projet’, which brings together architects, artists, and local people. Central to the project is the concept of ‘symbiosis': the interaction between nature and architecture. The installations, buildings, and works of art created are inextricably linked with their island surroundings.
At Japan House London, visitors can embark on a journey around Inujima, taking in architectural models of the artists’ works, such as a full-scale replica of part of Yellow Flower Dream by Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. These will feature alongside videos, photography and testimonies from residents on the impact the project has had on their lives. The exhibition has been created by Hasegawa Yūko, the artistic director of the Inujima ‘Art House Project’, and internationally renowned architect Sejima Kazuyo."
