The works in this exhibition, made by twenty different artists working across the UK, explore this tension in multiple ways: materially, conceptually, linguistically and sensorially. Here, they are presented in the same breath: each is a separate proposition held together in the same space. This shared space encompasses not only the gallery, but the space of the Freelands Artist Programme, through which this exhibition has emerged. These artists are fellow travellers on the programme, participating across the same two-year span, albeit from different locations – around partner organisations in Belfast, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Cardiff – breathing simultaneously across time and space.

Describing their work for this exhibition, artist Rebecca Jagoe cites Empedocles, the Greek pagan philosopher, who believed that "all matter in the universe is held together in an eternal breath, a perpetual inhale and exhale, and that all beings are propelled by the conflicting forces of love and strife".
